✓  Noise cancelling headset with microphone: the new “must-have”

Whether working from home or at the office, the tranquility of the environment is regularly compromised. In parallel, remote audio exchanges are intensifying with the Covid-19 crisis. However, when face-to-face or teleworking, spending hours on the phone or video conferencing can weaken collaboration or productivity. What is the reality of telephony at work? Is audio equipment provided to employees? How can a noise cancelling headset with microphone remedy the difficulties encountered by employees and the self-employed?

THE MEANS OF REMOTE COMMUNICATION MADE ESSENTIAL BY COVID-19

In 2020, the lockdown measures linked to the coronavirus led to almost generalized teleworking, at least in the tertiary sector. Companies had to adapt to organize remote working and many have turned to video conferencing applications to organize their meetings. These apps saw a sharp increase in activity between March 14th and 21st with no less than 62 million downloads, an increase of 90% compared to the previous year.

For example, the use of Microsoft’s Teams app – which competes with Zoom, Slack, and a dozen others for teamwork – jumped 1,000% in March 2020 alone.

The consequences on the well-being of employees were not long to come, so much that some now have a name, such as “Zoom fatigue”. This is due to eye movements on the screen, both in an attempt to determine the reactions of others and to monitor one’s own presence. However, sound remains the main concern for professionals, which is hardly surprising given its essential nature in distance communications and its quality often far from ideal.

MAIN DIFFICULTIES RELATED TO POOR AUDIO QUALITY

According to a French study conducted by the JNA association and Ifop, one in two working people in France report difficulties in understanding voices during remote communication.

When it comes to video conferencing quality, 46% of users claim that the audio quality can detract from good video conferencing communication (Lifesize, 2020).

Main causes cited: background noise (42%) and the need to ask the interlocutor to repeat a piece of information (34%). This last point should not be overlooked since professionals lose an average of 29 minutes per week having their interlocutor repeat their calls due to poor call quality, which results in just over three days per year per employee (JNA association & Ifop).

The audio quality and the difficulty of understanding have consequences on the stress and fatigue of employees, but also on their ability to perform. Ultimately, this represents a considerable loss of productivity at the company level.

HOW ARE PROFESSIONALS EQUIPPED TO COMMUNICATE FROM A DISTANCE ?

Without necessarily being a noise-cancelling headphones study, the Ifop/JNA survey points out that more than 3 in 5 working people used headphones to work from home during confinement.  Of these, 20% used it for more than two hours a day. However, the use of this accessory seems specific to certain profiles. 74% of these users are under 35 year old.  In addition, 73% live in the Paris area and 70% say they have children: certainly professionals who cannot isolate themselves, or have an increased need for concentration.

If we take the scale of all teleworkers in France, 67% believe that they did not benefit from good environmental and material conditions to perform their tasks during the first confinement. Fortunately, the lines are moving. Equipping its employees with noise-cancelling headphones is more and more often part of the quality of life at work procedures that are essential for the proper functioning of the company.

In fact, according to a Sapio study from September 2020, 95% of executives announced that they plan to regularly buy audio equipment for their employees. Audio quality has become so important that 78% of international decision makers are willing to invest and benefit from it.

NOISE CANCELLING HEADSET WITH MICROPHONE: WHY IS IT A “MUST-HAVE”?

Adequate audio equipment should not only improve remote collaboration among employees, but also their ability to concentrate regardless of their work environment.

When it comes to choosing good quality headphones for telephony, there are several characteristics to consider. Beyond the possibility of a fluid connection to information systems, to landlines and mobile phones, comfort, and especially weight, are crucial when the headphones are used as an everyday tool. For intensive telephony activities, good voice capture is essential to ensure effective exchanges and avoid situations where the interlocutor must ask to repeat the information. In this case, the use of a boom microphone is an advantage.

Working with a noise cancelling headset with microphone

A noise cancelling headset with microphone is known to further improve the experience for the user and their interlocutors. In the case of the made-in-France TILDE® Pro headsets, directional voice capture by three digital microphones, combined with a selective noise denoising algorithm are installed in a detachable boom microphone.

This advanced technology embedded in the TILDE® PRO headsets allows the user to make clear and pleasant phone calls for everyone, including the interlocutors, regardless of the ambient noise. It also ensures a confidential conversation thanks to the cancellation of the surrounding voices usually heard by the interlocutor.

Finally, for those who need to work in peace, active noise control technology can reduce ambient noise enough so that it is neither distracting nor tiring. This is a real asset when we know that, according to a CidB survey, 57% of French people today feel more sensitive to the quality of the noise environment than before confinement.
